When I shot Polaroids of the Potomac, I was testing the process of transferring images from Polaroid prints to a canvas. The results were dark and gritty, and took on a painterly result that I did not expect.
I live fairly close to the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. It is a place I go to escape, explore, and play. The characteristics of the region, particularly in the mornings and evenings, are constantly changing with the weather, which helps amplify the effects of the Polaroid transfers.
Each piece is a Polaroid print transferred onto a 4x6” canvas board. Each one is unique in its own way and can not be duplicated since I am taking one image and transferring it over, utilizing an analogue process. The labor of this process reminded me of the excitement I would get when I would shoot film and witness the final image appearing on my exposed prints.
I hope you enjoy Polaroids of the Potomac.
