I lived in Florida for a few years, and after shopping for a Christmas tree in shorts, I realized how lucky I had been to grow up in a place with four distinct seasons. I missed the changing color of the leaves, the snow, and all the natural indicators that align with certain holidays. Since returning to Maryland, I can not help but notice and celebrate every seasonal shift.
Seasons is an observation of the variety of changes in my surrounding environment throughout the year. Clouds passing with changes in the weather. Leaves that have fallen and gathered on the ground. The rebirth of flowers. Cold winter mornings and warm summer evenings as the sun rises and sets along the Potomac River. Many of these changes are gradual, often unnoticed until they are nearly complete. A natural calendar to remind us of upcoming events or holidays. The smells of the seasons spark a sense of nostalgia. Reminding us of various experiences, possibly shared with a loved one.
This series was photographed in every season using Polaroid I-Type film transferred to 8x10” & 4x6” wood artists’ panels. Polaroid film was chosen to emphasize the nostalgic feel of times past. All of the images were created in the surrounding areas of Brunswick, MD.
Many of these changes we take for granted, only realizing their significance after we have stepped away from the region. Each period of the year holds a unique beauty. Through this series, I hope to inspire others to slow down, recognize these transitions, and embrace the uniqueness of each passing season.
I hope you enjoy my series, Seasons.
